NEMCC baseball splits with Southwest Tennessee

Northeast Mississippi Community College stepped away from the friendly confines of Harold T. White Field on Tuesday, March 19.

After playing six straight games at home during the Spring Break holiday, Kent Farris' club came away with a split against Southwest Tennessee at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tenn.

Northeast (10-8) captured the first game 6-2 before watching the Saluqis rally for a 7-6 walk-off win in the nightcap at Christian Brothers High School after the initial matchup was  moved from March 18 at Southwest Tennessee's home field due to inclement weather.

Northeast jumped out early on the host in the opener – plating six runs in its first three at bats and rode the strong arm of Booneville's Kyle Stephenson for the 6-2 victory.

Stephenson picked up his first win of the year while the Tigers pounded out seven hits on offense with Corinth's Blake Frazier leading the way with a pair of hits.

In addition to a single, Frazier also came away with a double in the opener along with Falkner's Will Robertson.

Southwest Tennessee (14-20) found its offense midway through the nightcap as the Saluqis plated six runs in the fourth and walked off with the one-run victory with a single digit in the bottom of the seventh.

Northeast jumped out to a 1-0 lead after three and added a four-spot in the fourth before Southwest Tennessee responded with its six-run at bat.

Northeast rallied back to knot the contest at 6-all in the fifth before the offenses settled down until the final inning of regulation.

Southaven's Justin Neal led the Tigers on offense with two of the Tigers eight hits including a triple while team captain Ethan Estes of Biggersville collected a double in the contest.

After stepping out of North Division play to take on the Saluqis, Northeast heads back into league play against Northwest Mississippi in Senatobia on today, March 20. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
