WINEMILLER’S BIG HITS LEADS TO SWEEP OVER #24 MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST

Booneville, MS – Northeast returned home to The Plex on Saturday with a doubleheader against #24 Mississippi Gulf Coast where an efficient performance at the plate from Brody Winemiller helped to propel the Tigers to a sweep over the Bulldogs, edging out game one 6-5 before dominating game two 10-3.

A single up the middle from Colin Flurry in the bottom of the first inning kicked off the scoring front for Northeast with an early lead that was exceeded by Gulf Coast in the second with a pair of runs to move ahead 2-1. Cooper Davis singled through the left side to drive in Conner McKnatt while Flurry stepped back up to the plate and hammered out an RBI-single to bring Eaton home for a 3-2 lead entering the fourth. A solo homer from the Bulldogs locked up the score in the top of the inning until an RBI triple from Winemiller in the bottom of the fourth gave the lead back to the Tigers 4-3. Once more Gulf Coast responded with a run in the fifth to tie the score at five while another run in the seventh put them ahead by one. Eaton helped shift the momentum back to Northeast with a 2-RBI double down the left field line to bring home McKnatt and Winemiller for a one score lead at the end of the seventh where clutch pitching by Cole Sanders and defensive plays by the Tigers allowed Northeast to hold on to their lead for a 6-5 win in game one.

Key Stats from Game 1:

  • Sanders recorded his first win of the season with a pair of strikeouts through 2.1 innings pitched and allowed only one hit.
  • Winemiller went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs, a triple, and an RBI while Eaton went 2-for-4 with one run, a double, and two RBI.

Scoring started early and often for the Tigers in game two with Kieran Coleman singling up the middle to drive in Brett Haas before Winemiller hammered out a 2-RBI homer to center field for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. A 2-RBI double from Easton Fesmire allowed Trae Cagle and Eaton to round the bases for a pair of runs to grow their lead to five while a wild pitch from the Bulldogs let Fesmire steal home to make it a 6-0 lead for Northeast. One run by Gulf Coast in the top of the fourth put them on the board in game two while a double from McKnatt in the bottom of the inning allowed Winemiller to score and keep their lead intact heading to the fifth. A pair of runs by the Bulldogs trimmed the Tiger lead down to five but grew back to seven thanks to a two-run homer from Drew Hollimon followed by a throwing error from Gulf Coast that let Eaton steal home to help finish off the contest 10-3.

Key Stats from Game 2:

  • Matthew Osteen earned his fifth win of the season with 4.2 innings pitched where he struck out two batters and allowed three hits.
  • Winemiller went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs, two doubles, a home run, and two RBI.
