NORTHEAST PREPARES TO DO BATTLE WITH OLDEST RIVAL

Booneville, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College will renew one of its longest standing rivalries when the Tigers host Itawamba Community College on Saturday, October 20 for Homecoming 2012.

Themed "Let the Good Times Roar," Northeast will be looking to roll to a win against Itawamba in the fifty-third meeting between the two schools.

Northeast and Itawamba have met on the field ever since the Tigers began football in 1949 with the exception of an 11-year hiatus when the Northeast football team was dormant in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Itawamba holds a 33-16-3 overall mark in the series but Northeast was able to score a win against the Indians at Tiger Stadium in 2009 as Northeast head football coach Ricky Smither scored his first on-field win with a 28-21 decision against the Indians that snapped a 12-game skid.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. but the Northeast Booneville campus will be buzzing with activity starting early in the morning.

Northeast will host an alumni gathering starting at 9 a.m. in the Black and Gold Lounge of the Frank Haney Union before turning its attention to its Sports Hall of Fame and newly-founded Alumni Hall of Fame induction luncheon at 11 a.m.

Northeast's baseball program will host its annual baseball alumni game starting at 9 a.m. while the Northeast softball team will welcome its alumni during its alumni game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 21.

An hour prior to kickoff Northeast will honor the Sports Hall of Fame and Alumni Hall of Fame inductees along with baseball and cheer alumni.

Northeast will also honor the 2003 softball team that advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament in Dodge City, Iowa and the 1986-87 football team.

Saturday's matchup with the Indians will also serve as Military Appreciation Day for the Northeast football program. Over 100 active military will be on hand at the game and the Northeast Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) has requested a helicopter flyover prior to the game and will have the Howitzer cannon from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on hand as well.

Northeast enters Saturday's game with 2-5 mark overall and a 1-4 mark in the North Division while Itawamba comes in with a 4-3, 2-2 record.

Both teams bring strong special teams into the game.

Northeast punter Jonathan Harrison (Belmont) leads the nation in punting average with 42.7 yards per punt and 12 kicks inside the 20. Itawamba's Asian Ruff is eighth in the nation with 38.1 yards per punt average and just two inside the 20.
