Chagolla leads Northeast to sweep of Northwest

Northeast Mississippi Community College freshman infielder Bianca Chagolla of Riverside, California made the most of her initial appearance in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges' (MACJC) North Division on Friday, March 8.

Chagolla was 3-for-7 at the plate with two home runs – including a grand slam in her North Division debut that propelled the Lady Tigers to a 6-5, 7-6 sweep of Northwest Mississippi.

Chagolla gave the host a 5-0 lead over the Lady Rangers in the opening game when she connected on a Casey Baddley offering for a grand slam that chased home Dana Glissen, Gracie Michael, Ellen Tarrant and herself.

In the nightcap, Chagolla did it on the mound and at the plate as the Northeast freshman tossed 2.1 innings and gave up just two hits, three runs – two earned and struck out a pair and then turned the trick again with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth that scored Glissen, Michael and herself and set the stage for the Lady Tigers' comeback.

On the day, Chagolla accounted for seven runs batted in (RBI), scored four runs, stole a base and had one walk.

While Chagolla was providing the offensive power for the Lady Tigers, Erin Dixson was keeping the Lady Ranger bats in check.

Dixson went the distance in the 6-5 opening win against Northwest Mississippi and then came on in relief of Chagolla in the nightcap – tossing 4.2 innings for her second win of the afternoon.

Dixson watched as Northwest Mississippi battled back from down 6-0 in the opener only to shut the door on the Lady Ranger chances in the top of the seventh.

After Roxanna Kime's double to center field scored Rachel Kelly to make it a 6-5 contest, Dixson made sure the Lady Rangers did not tie the game with a grounder back to herself and struck out Dee Alvarez to preserve the win.

In the nightcap, Haleigh Moffett gave Dixson her second win of the day when the freshman from West Lauderdale lofted a two-out double on a 1-2 count in to left that scored Andrea Cutts and Chagolla for the come from behind 7-6 victory.

Northeast will look to continue its momentum when the Lady Tigers travel to Goodman to take on Holmes Community College on Wednesday, March 13 for a North Division doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
