Booneville, MS. – Northeast Softball continued their win streak this past weekend to improve to 8-0 on the 2026 season after grabbing wins over Dyersburg (7-5), Frontier (9-6), and a sweep over Mineral Area (5-1 and 10-1) to remain in the top of the standings after week two of their season.
Opening game of the weekend tournament saw Northeast take down Dyersburg 7-5 in what started out as a low scoring contest between both sides. An early run for the Tigers by Leah Walker of an RBI from Bailey Houston put Northeast ahead 1-0 in the first inning with neither side able to round the bases again until the fifth. A duo of doubles in the bottom of the fifth by Jeoreia Henry and Ava Elliott helped to push the Tigers' lead ahead before Houston and Adin Shelton both hammered out a pair of homers which led to a Northeast win over Dyersburg in game one.
In game two against Mineral Area, it was once again a low scoring contest through the first few innings despite a banger from Shelton that landed outside of the park for an early score by the Tigers. Northeast capitalized on errors by the Cardinals to add to their total in the bottom of the sixth before Shelton once again stepped up and connected on a big hit that resulted in an RBI triple and later found home herself off a sacrifice fly to grab a 5-1 win over Mineral Area.
After a 2-0 start on the weekend the Tigers had a rough start to open day two of their home invitational as they fell behind Frontier 6-2 after the first three innings. Northeast was able to rally in the fourth with a big hit after big hit from the Tigers including a 2-RBI double from Walker to tie up the score 6-6 entering the 5th where Northeast took lead off a homer by Chloe Skelton to help take a 9-6 win over Frontier.
Northeast took the field in their final game of the weekend in a rematch against Mineral Area to remain undefeated on the season and did so in run rule fashion. Shelton connected on a RBI triple out to right center field to give the Tigers their first lead of the game and never looked back as she stepped back up to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and sent a rocket to left field for a 2-RBI double to make it a 6-1 lead for Northeast. If the Cardinals didn't have nightmares of Shelton before, her final at bat did as she sent another rocket over the wall for a game winning home run to wrap up the weekend 4-0 and improve the Tigers to 8-0 on the season.
Northeast will hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday when they take on Columbia State before heading to Oxford, Alabama for the Best of the Best JUCO Invitational. Saturday will be their next home appearances with the Tigers taking on the Panthers of Pellissippi State in a doubleheaders beginning at 3:00 PM.
