Tatyana Lofton is returning to the two-year college ranks as Northeast Mississippi Community College’s new assistant coach. She comes to Northeast after serving in the same role at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM).
Lofton has a championship pedigree dating back to her prep career at Madison-Ridgeland Academy. That includes national tournament berths during her tenures as an athlete at Jones College and an instructor at Western Nebraska Community College.
Lofton worked alongside Missy Bilderback, who coached her at Jones, for a pair of successful seasons at ULM that featured a run to the Great 8 of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
That special 2023-24 team won 21 games, which was the most for the Warhawks in 19 years. ULM defeated Grambling State (La.) University and the University of Southern Mississippi for its first playoff wins outside of their conference tournament since 1985.
Daisha Bradford broke a four decades old school record for most points in a single season with 675. She went on to sign a professional contract with San German Atleticas in Puerto Rico.
Lofton was the Warhawks’ recruiting coordinator on top of her coaching duties. She instructed two all-conference honorees and the 2024 Sun Belt Sixth Woman of the Year in Katlyn Manuel.
She was part of another historic campaign at Presbyterian (S.C.) College during her lone season on its staff. The Blue Hose set 10 new NCAA Division I school records in 2022-23, including total points, scoring average, field goal percentage and assists.
Lofton primarily developed the backcourt players at Presbyterian. Among them was Tilda Sjökvist, who obtained Big South Conference all-freshman distinction after posting 8.2 points per game along with 103 assists.
Her first full-time coaching position was at Western Nebraska. The Cougars went 28-2 during the 2019-20 season with a No. 2 ranking in the final National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll.
Western Nebraska captured the NJCAA Region 9 south sub-region title on the strength of a 26-game winning streak. The Cougars received an at-large bid to nationals, but the tournament was cancelled due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
TK Morehouse garnered first-team All-American laurels from the NJCAA as one of the top scorers in the country with 21 points per outing. Three other Western Nebraska performers secured All-Region 9 accolades.
Lofton came home to the south in the fall of 2021 to become a graduate assistant manager at the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide had a combined 37-24 ledger over her two years on campus.
Alabama also qualified for the postseason twice with an NCAA Tournament appearance, including a win over the University of North Carolina, in 2021 and a run to the WNIT quarterfinals one year later.
Lofton was a two-time all-conference and all-region standout at Jones. She lifted the Lady Bobcats to their inaugural national tournament trip with a 30-2 record during her sophomore campaign.
The Madison native averaged 12.4 points, four boards and 2.8 assists on the way to the NJCAA elite eight. Lofton was the leading scorer for Jones as a freshman with 16 points per contest on the dot.
Lofton completed her playing career at Tulane (La.) University from 2017-19. She participated in 54 games with the Green Wave and accounted for 5.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Her top performances at Tulane include 16 points at Wichita State (Kan.) University and five dimes against the University of Memphis (Tenn.) in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament.
Lofton guided Madison-Ridgeland Academy to the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class AAA and overall championships as a senior with an outstanding 40-4 record. She was the most valuable player (MVP) of the MAIS all-star game that year.
