NEMCC GOLF SIGNS TRIO OF LOCAL, OUT-OF-STATE TALENT

BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College head golf coach Nick Coln picked up three signees on Tuesday, April 23.

Coln signed Tupelo Christian Preparatory School's Heath Davis, Lafayette County's Joseph Taylor and Lewis County, Tennessee's Zach Potts at a ceremony at the Booneville-based college.

Davis helped lead the Tupelo Christian Prep Eagles to a third place overall finish in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 1A State Tournament in 2012.

Davis also helped lead the Eagles to the Region 2-1A District golf championship in 2012 and was medalist for the event after firing a 74.

During the opening round of the Class 1A State Tournament at Big Oaks Golf Club in Saltillo, Davis fired and 89 but cut 10 strokes off his first day's score to help lead the Eagles to the third place finish.

Davis' scores have continued to improve during his senior season. Against Smithville on April 15, Davis was the medalist of the Eagles match with the Seminoles after firing a 72 at Big Oaks and the Tupelo Christian Prep senior helped the Eagles best Nettleton on March 28 with a 37.

Taylor has been the driving force for the Lafayette County High School golf team.

During the District 2-4A golf tournament held at Wedgewood Golf Course in Olive Branch, Taylor led the Commodores to a fourth-place finish in the league tournament.

On the day, Taylor finished with an 88.

Davis helped lead the Commodores to a runner-up finish in a meet at Oaks Country Club in New Albany against host New Albany, Mooreville and Pontotoc.

Taylor bested almost 10 other golfers at the event to help lead Lafayette County to a runner-up finish to host New Albany and outpace Mooreville and Pontotoc by six and 28 strokes, respectively.

Potts has made a name for himself on the Tennessee golf scene. Potts placed third at the Tennessee Golf Association (TGA) event in 2012 and took part in the 2012 Tennessee junior amateur golf tournament.

For Lewis County High School, Potts has had the lowest average since his freshman year carrying a streak of low rounds from 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

During his time at Lewis County, Potts finished fifth in the district golf tournament and qualified to play in the regional event.

On his home course, the Hohenwald Municipal Golf Course, Potts averages a 75.
